The Medical Director, Universal Medicare Foundation, Oseikhuemen Ejele, has expressed concerns about the rising incidence of HIV/AIDS in Akwa Ibom State
He said this in Etinan on Thursday at a health care programme organised by Total E&P Nigeria Limited in association with the Universal Medicare Foundation.
He said the test conducted on 77 people in the state, showed that four of them had been infected by the HIV.
According to him, the figure represents 5.1 per cent prevalence rate in the state against the 4.1 national rate.
He explained, “We have small laboratory which we carry along. We have conducted some tests on 225 people.
“HIV test was done on 77 people and four of them were positive. This gives us the prevalence rate of 5.1 per cent. This rate is higher than the national rate which is 4.1 per cent.”
Ejele said the foundation had also performed several major surgical operations, including 127 dental surgeries in the state.
He said, “In doing this, Total E&P Nigeria Limited has brought out what we regard as the most essential commodity any human being will want: good health. You know it is said health is wealth – health is not only wealth but it is better than wealth. You need good health to perform in other spheres of life.”
