EFCC grants Lamido’s son bail
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has granted, Aminu Sule, the eldest son of the Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido an administrative bail, barely 24 hours after he was arrested in Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano for alleged money laundering.
The spokesperson for the commission, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said although charges have been prepared, the suspect would be arraigned in court on a later date. “EFCC official who spoke on condition of anonymity, however, disclosed that he was granted bail because judges were not available in Kano yesterday to take his plea because of the judges conference ongoing in Abuja.
It would be recalled that Aminu, was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday by a team of security operatives from the EFCC at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) over alleged money laundering. According to security sources at the airport, Aminu was arrested in his attempt to board an Egypt Air to Cairo by 12.30a.m Wednesday by the officials of the EFCC.
The governor’s son was said to have declared $10, 000 on the counter, to enable him embark on his trip and allegedly concealed some money. But upon further search and interrogation, the officials of EFCC were said to have discovered additional $40, 000 concealed in his luggage.
This action by Aminu for false declaration of what was in his possession prompted his immediate arrest. But defending his son, Governor Lamido said the son was travelling abroad, as a follow up to previous medical trips, in respect of the treatment of his grand-daughter, who had a spinal cord problem, insisting that the impression being created by the EFCC was ‘false and mischievous.’
In a release, signed by the governor’s Director of Press Affairs, Umar Kyari Jitau, the governor said: “I have read from Sahara Reporters that my son, Aminu Sule Lamido had been arrested at the Malam Aminu Kano Airport for carrying 50, 000 USD on him while on his way to Egypt.
“For the purpose of removing the notion that he was embarking on money laundering mission on my behalf, that I find it necessary to clarify the allegation. “Aminu Sule has a daughter born with a spinal problem and was taken to Cleopatra Hospital in Cairo, Egypt last year.
